remember when i told you that a little bird told me that my neighboor was feeding a raccoon ... well that same little bird just came over and informed us that "one became four."
silly neighboors are feeding a little family of raccoons now {daddy, mommy, and two babies}. i am really frightened now. and you know what will happen when the cold weather comes around, the family will move into my chimney!!!

•using my luggage {i'm seriously in love with my london fog three piece set. i visit it every morning in the basement and pretend i'm mary poppins.}
•living on the east coast, and in the big city.
•meeting so many wonderful people from all different parts of the world.
•sharing the gospel.
•seeing the fireworks on the fourth of july in our nation’s capital.
•seeing the lights on temple square {word on the street are these babies are BEAUTIFUL}.

i’m proud to say that, although i’ll miss these beautiful parts of my life, i’m happy to sacrifice them for my church. my good friend breanne {who is serving in the taiwan taipei mission as we speak} said this about her sacrifice:

“this mission, as a tithing on the first 21 years of my life, will be HIS.”

i’m more than happy to give these 18 months of my life to him. he is, after all, the one who gave me the loves i'll miss most.

sometimes, in real life, my knee makes a creeking noise, like an oil thirsty door hinge. my knee was especially noisy one day, so naturally the noise followed me to my dreams. the dream took place in a doctor's office, most likely a knee specialist. i waited on the tissue papered examination table as the doctor pondered my predicament. finally he broke the news, "you have some sort of ring worm twisted around your kneecap," he said somberly, "i'll have to make and incision to grab it and then pull the little guy outta there." he went right into the procedure. oddly enough, the incision was barely noticed but as he began to pull on what looked like yellowed yarn and smelled like the clay in the game cranium, the pain set in. my kneecap was twisting like a dj's turn table when suddenly the lemon-scented-knee-yarn came to a stop. the doctor tugged then came to a conclusion, "i can't pull this out and cutting it off would result in a re-growth. you'll just have to wait till it falls off." i stared at the monster thinking, how am i supposed to live with this three foot long tail trailing behind me?
and then i woke up.

"you know, stamps, envelopes."

just the other evening i decided to try on my mom's wedding dress. i do this from time to time to see if i could wear it for my wedding dress {if that day indeed comes}. this time we had a bit of trouble zipping the ol'girl up.

paige and i have started an agency devoted to hunting and bringing to justice raccoons that stalk our homes and families. a little bird told us that our next door neighboor has been feeding a raccoon every night. apparently it comes and taps on their door between 10:30 and 11:30pm and they feed it a home-cooked meal! we set very few goals for ourselves this summer, but seeing the raccoon is at the top of the list. plus, we're hesitant to sleep out in the backyard {a summer MUST!} in fear we might be eaten by said raccoon.

this year, it's gossip girl. in this delightful series you've got:

blair {aka b}: this girl is seriously beasty, really i'm so frightened by this character. that being said, her style is superb.

1. i saw "up" on friday ... simply marvelous. and just what i needed; life is it's own adventure. and i have to say that ellie reminded me and others of little courtney. definitely see this. definitely.

2. i also saw "the brother's bloom" this weekend. very delightful. very woody alleny. see it too.
3. this brings me to my next subject ... the broadway theaters on 3rd. i'm an avid movie lover and i quite enjoy seeing copious movies in the theaters, however, so many people today are completely disconcerned with respect that watching a movie in the theaters becomes like watching a movie in their own living room. all that texting and talking makes me crazy.
here's where the broadway comes in. its in the heart of salt lake {what's better than that?}, they show the "artsy" movies that don't come to big theaters {usually the better films}, and only movie lovers {people that don't talk or text during the film} go to this theater. its great.
so if you can't find a good movie to go to in the big theaters go to the broadway and be satisfied.

i had surgery last week ...

the good thing about having surgery is getting presents to help you cope. katie brought me some delectable cupcakes from so cupcake, my grandma gave me some mangoes and nuts, and my parents gave me a lovely lavender plant.

it needs full sun and not a ton of attention or water, but it smells and looks so marvelous. i can't wait for this.

since obtaining my degree, i have been less than active. i wake up late, watch the price is right, make delicious lunches, then sit around till paige gets home. then we party. its been fun.

i'm glad to announce that i have been reading {something i never do} and doing lots of organizing {something i always do}. yesterday i cleaned and organized my parent's computer room and came upon this little number.

it was my mother's "wedding suit". when i asked my dad if he remembered what it was he said "of course i do, its the first thing i took off of your mother." which was promptly followed by "ewwww!" from paige and i.

i'm also getting a fair share of shopping in. last weekend i bought a foundation brush {best thing ever} and russian red lipstick from mac. i never knew how liberating a color of lipstick could be. its great.

and today ... i finally cut my hair!

i feel all "soul-searchy" today. i always revert to writing when i'm like this. and it's usually around a time when something big is about to happen in my life. i found this out today while reading my journal. listen to this uber-sensitive courtney after she just saw "into the wild" {a great film}, also ignore any grammar errors or expletives, its my journal:

[i just watched this movie and feel like i identified with the character in some ways. i want to be "self-actualized". i want to know who i am. what i am. where i am going. i struggle with heavy shit like LOVE, DISAPPOINTMENT, REJECTION, HAPPINESS, PAIN, SORROW. what are these words? how have i felt these things? do i know what each feel like? its 2:30 and i just feel like crying for the pains of the world. i hate it when i get like this. anyways, i shouldn't have written now cause i'm all "feely". i feel it all. i feel it all. "happiness is only real when it's shared."]

sorry to unload on you like this. but i'm moving on from an imperative point in my life in less than a month. i'm freakin'. more from said journal:

[i just feel like i can't deal with disappointment as well as i should be able to. and it cripples me. this is one of the truest statements i've heard in my life, "every plan is a tiny prayer to father time" {thank you ben gibbard} i make plans, i have dreams and hope and pray they are met, if not, i am disappointed. i feel like i'm not living life to the fullest and taking advantage of every breath god gives me and this causes a great disappointment: sorrow. i wanted to have a marvelous college experience, i wanted to be a school counselor or therapist, i wanted to work at a group home. i wanted to move to new york, be a chef, serve a mission . . . not to say these things haven't played out or still cannot be, but it is because they haven't gone the way i thought, that i sorrow.
i make this "prayer to father time" and hope that my final year in college year goes well . . . i hope to feel i am doing the right thing with my life after college, whether that means moving to new york or not . . . but if not.]

that i haven't blogged for a long long time. below is my chronicled {is that a word?} month:
february 5th: watched boring movie for film class and not so boring the science of sleep.
february 6th: watched another boring movie for film class. had cafe rio to cancel out boringness. also saw he's just not that into you. now hate men.
february 7th: attended ALL DAY training for new job at women's crisis center. did you know that 1 in 3 women in utah will experience some form of sexual violence in their lives? ahh!
february 8th: attended amazing music and the spoken word .
february 9th: began writing letters to the future mr. courtney. {perhaps coming soon to the blog world. i'm not sure i want to share those}
february 10th: realized my holga was broken again! dang camera. also took this amazing picture of shannen that i love so much.

february 11th: partied at cheesecake factory with paige for her 18th. {happy birthday sister girl}

february 12th: wished stevenannie happy wedding, ate the most delish cake i've ever tasted, partied like a rock star, etc.

february 13th: got holga picties back {only 5 turned out, but i love those 5 with all my heart}

february 14th: saw coraline with valentine. {it's super good!}
february 15th: went to lava!

february 16th: came back from lava.
february 17th: laid in bed all day and watched movies because i didn't have class. {i'm so lazy. i need to fix that}
february 18th: wrote a paper about parenting {i'm not a parent so i don't really i know what i wrote about. weird}
today: wrote really long post that probably no one will read.

italian cream cake.

cake:
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup oil
5 eggs, separated
1 teaspoon soda
1 cups buttermilk
2 cups flour
1 cup angel flake coconut
1/2 teaspoon butter flavoring
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

cream sugar, shortening, and oil. add egg yolks one at a time, beating after each addition. stir soda into buttermilk. add buttermilk alternately with flour to batter. fold in coconut. beat egg whites and fold into mixture. add flavorings. pour into 3 greased and floured 9-inch pans. bake in 350 degree oven for 25 minutes. cool cake layers before icing.

icing:
one 8-ounce package cream cheese
1/2 cup margarine
one 1-pound box confectioners sugar
1/2 teaspoon butter flavoring
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

cream cheese and margarine. beat in sugar gradually. add flavorings. this makes lots of icing for each layer top and sides. serves 16.

last night i attended the annual christmas devotional at the conference center. this is one of my favorite traditions my family has. the devotional has a great way of refocusing our thoughts to the real meaning of christmas. in his talk, president uchtdorf relayed this message originally from elder wirthlin's talk the great commandment. i thought it appropriate 1} because of his recent passing and 2} because j'adore quotes on love:

"love is the beginning, the middle, and the end of the pathway of discipleship. it comforts, counsels, cures, and consoles. it leads us through valleys of darkness and through the veil of death. in the end love leads us to the glory and grandeur of eternal life. . . true love lasts forever. it is eternally patient and forgiving. it believes, hopes, and endures all things. that is the love our heavenly father bears for us."

remember this as you celebrate this holiday season.
